Letters from Readers: More about "LEAVE THE CENSORS ALONE"
"Gentlemen: When I read about the attitudes of such fellows as JS of Hollywood it makes my blood boil. Hethinks he can set aloof on Cloud 9, ignore the censors who are trying to throttle freedom of expression and when they are no longer opposed they will be satisfied and leave art alone, but I believe if many of these repressed bigots were given their own way they would stop at nothing. Petty politicians in our government are only too glad to bow to pressure groups. The only obvious solution is counter pressure groups such as you have mentioned, ACLU, American Sunbathing & Health, Friends, and other groups which believe the government has no right to regulate individual conscience when the welfare of the group is not clearly imperiled. These groups form focal points for the limited number of thinking people in this country who are not quite ready for Big Brother to take over." D.K. Spokane, Wash, ...BILL OF RIGHTS, UNPOPULAR. "Are you aware that many people will think you are 'unAmerican' for so vigorously defending the Bill of Rights? Did you know that if the Bill of Rights were put up for popular vote today, the voters of the United States would probably reject it. The people of this country are actually afraid of freedom and would actually prefer a paternal government or a benign dictator to the dangerous radicalism' of complete moral and political freedom. Almost every American would readily lay down his life in the name of freedom, and yet probably more than half of them could be induced to give up many of these freedoms without a struggle if their masters told them that the Communists or some other unpopular group could be destroyed by sacrificing their constitutional guarantees." V.D. Oakland, California.
